Random Orbital Sanders
3M has raised the bar in the world of random orbital sanders for wood and metal finishing. The new sanders released on July 1, 2011 feature the same great clean-sand dust collection technology in the sanding process for the vac-ready and SGV Self-generating Vacuum Models.
The reason for this efficiency is two-fold. First, they have developed a unique dust hole pattern that is a series of small dust collection holes arranged in a swirl pattern. These swirls follow the random orbit of the pad to "chase" after the dust as it is moving outward. The second feature is the 3M Filtrete dust collection bag. This is a HEPA 5 stage filter bag that is attached at the exhaust port. This also means there isn't a hose and bag being dragged across the workpiece.
The new features include enclosing the muffler in the house so they no longer break off. Also, the motor housing has been upgraded to aluminum. Testing indicated these as more durable during the occasional knock off the workbench. They are available in Non-vac, Self-Generating Vacuum, and Central-Vac Ready models, with orbit sizes of 5/16", 3/16", and 3/32". (Not all orbits are available in all sizes.)
3M's New Electric Random Orbit Sander. 
3M has released the new Elite Sanders in a compact electric random orbital sander version while maintiaining the low profile housing that operators desire for ease and comfort with reduced vibration over current electric sanders on the market today. The 5" electric sanders and 6" electric palm sanders are availble in non-vac and central vacuum models. The DC motor used eliminates motor brushes and armatures, making these 150 watt (30 V DC at 5 Amps) ideal for metal shops doing paint preparation or surface scuffing. In the metal or wood shop where there isn't sufficient compressed air, these compact electric random orbital sanders allow you to get the same great performance and comfort of pneumatic sanders anywhere in the shop without compromising spray booths or other critical compressed air operations. Furthermore, the economics of the DC technology present significant energy savings over compressor operations. Other features include a proprietary cooling system, variable speed settings, an extended wrist rest, reduced noise from the quite motor design, and exclusive 3M Gripping Material extending to the base to absorb and reduce vibration.

3M has release the new sanders in a total systems approach. In addition to the sanders, there are three product families of sanding discs to compliment the sanders. These are the 236U Hook-it Paper discs, the 216U Hook-it Paper Discs, and the 360L Hookit Clean Sand Film Discs. There are various grit ranges to accomplish almost any sanding task, from heavy stock removal to sealer sanding and high polish applications.
